Calamity Jane

Calamity Jane

Calamity Jane is a spirited, unconventional heroine who challenges societal norms in this show presented by Coleshill on Stage.

Set in the 1870s Dakota Territory, Calamity Jane is a tough, sharp-shooting, and independent woman who protects the stagecoach and town from Native American attacks while maintaining a tomboyish persona. She harbours a secret crush on Lieutenant Danny Gilmartin, who sees her only as one of the guys.

When Deadwood’s saloon owner, Henry Miller, struggles to entertain the town with stage performances, Calamity volunteers to bring the famous Chicago actress, Adelaide Adams to perform at the Golden Garter Saloon. However, a mix-up occurs, and she mistakenly brings back Adams’ maid, Katie Brown, who pretends to be the star. Katie’s charm and talent win over the townsfolk, complicating Calamity’s feelings for Danny and her friendship with Wild Bill Hickock, her friendly rival.

Through these events, Calamity begins to explore her feminine side, shedding her tomboy persona and attending the local Fort ball as a transformed woman. Ultimately, she realizes that her heart belongs to Wild Bill Hickock, while Katie and Danny fall in love, resolving the romantic entanglements and highlighting themes of self-discovery, courage, and friendship.

The show combines action, humour, and musical numbers, including "Secret Love", and portrays Calamity Jane as a spirited, unconventional heroine who challenges societal norms while finding love and personal growth.

An amateur production presented by Coleshill On Stage.
